About Williamston, SC
Williamston sits in the Blue Ridge foothills of northeastern Anderson County, roughly 15 miles from both Anderson (the county seat) and Greenville, with the neighboring towns of Pelzer and West Pelzer about 2 miles north. The town’s origin is a genuinely good story: in 1842, West Allen Williams discovered a mineral spring on his property, and by 1845 he was promoting “Williams’ Spring” in the Anderson Gazette — visitors camped in tents to take the waters.
A post office opened in 1850 under the name “Mineral Spring,” and the town was formally renamed Williamston and chartered in 1852. For a stretch before the Civil War, it was one of the largest resort centers in South Carolina, earning the nickname the “Saratoga of the South,” with hotels built to host visitors drawn by the spring.
A fire in 1860 destroyed much of that resort district, and the town’s path shifted afterward — first toward the textile mills that anchored its economy for over a century, and later into the residential Upstate community it is today.
The original spring is preserved at Mineral Spring Park, said to be among the oldest public parks in the country, which still hosts the town’s Springwater Festival and other community events, and where founder West Allen Williams himself is now buried.
